I love writing in kindergarten because everyone is working at their personal level. I encourage phonetic spelling. Some students may only hear one sound in a word right now. They may or may not know what letter makes that sound, so I tell them to make their best guess. Sometimes they have words to copy, such as from the word wall or from a writing prompt.
