"Mama Provi and the Pot of Rice"

Yesterday we read "Mama Provi and the Pot of Rice" about a Puerto Rican grandma who makes the BEST arroz con pollo and delivers it to her sick granddaughter.  Along the way, she trades portions for her neighbors' specialities, leading to a feast at the end of the story.  I asked students to complete the sentence, "My _____ makes the best ______."

We Are Writing!

We are writing everyday in our journals.  I love writing in kindergarten because everyone is working at their personal level.  I encourage phonetic spelling.  Some students may only hear one sound in a word right now.  They may or may not know what letter makes that sound, so I tell them to make their best guess.  Sometimes they have words to copy, such as from the word wall or from a writing prompt.  For the other words, I tell them, "It doesn't have to be perfect spelling, just do your best sounding out!"
